A webcrawler is a man who lives on a boat and uses a special flute or 'scrampoopler' in order to attract seabirds to his craft . At dawn every day he crawls up a special web ( the scornpope) and dangles from the top playing tempting melodies on his scrampoopler . Once the birds have settled on his scornpope he suddenly starts to shake it violently and then starts screaming madly - making them flea back to their nests . Nobody knows why the webcrawler does this but it has been suggested he does it 'for a laugh' or 'thaark'

" A program that automatically fetches Web pages. Spiders are used to feed pages to search engines. It's called a spider because it crawls over the Web. Another term for these programs is webcrawler.

Because most Web pages contain links to other pages, a spider can start almost anywhere. As soon as it sees a link to another page, it goes off and fetches it. Large search engines, like Alta Vista, have many spiders working in parallel. "
