Magazines usually contain general information that is available for anyone to read. Pretty much any magazine available in a newsagents, book store, supermarket.

Journals contain far more scholarly information, are far more expensive, and aimed for specific people. Journals aren't usually available in stores for the general public.

A magazine is a periodical publication containing vatrious articles. A journal implies more of a scholarly, academic bent. Many journals are "refereed," where a panel of experts reviews and researches the articles before they are published, whereas in a magazine, an editor just checks them for grammar and accuracy.
Journals also are devoted to new research and analysis, where magazine content need not be novel.
Scientific American is a magazine. Science is a journal.

Thus, in drug stores and variety stores, you have a magazine rack where you find magazines like playboy, hot rod, chatelaine, etc. A journal contains specialised information written at an academic level directed to or at a particular audience, like medical journals, scientific journals, etc.

jour = day

A magazine has variety, like a convenience store. A journal is a daily account.
