You can do it in one of two ways -

1. Change of name by reputation. You simply change your name. You have little legal protection, though, and getting legal documents like passports, driving licences etc in your new name can be difficult if not bloody impossible. This is generally used by people who use stage names instead of their real name, so contracts in their stage name will be binding. It is frowned on for legal changing of surnames, though.

2. Deed poll. Varies from country to country, state to state. Here in London it costs £109.00 plus the dreaded VAT, or did last time I checked. Completely legally binding, in fact it is a criminal offence to use your old name in any legal manner (like opening a bank account etc).

There is no way around the costs - the el cheapo or free versions are riddled with legal problems. So, in this case as in many others, you get what you pay for.

You can call yourself anything what you want as long as it is not for illegal purposes. If you notify your bank / utilities/ rent or mortgage provider any people you owe debts to etc. You can put a notice in your local newspaper to say that from henceforward you wish to be known as ************ you can do it. If you wish to do it more formally you can go to a local solicitor and change your name by deed poll. Then post a copy to all the above. If you owe a lot of money and think by just changeing your name you can escape paying then this is illegal.

Hello. If you live in the U.K you can change your name for free by Statutory Declaration. Ask at local council offices for them to draft a form for you then get a known character reference to witness and sign it. Make copies and send one to your bank, informing them of the new name. Then do the same with your passport and driving license. I hope this helps and good luck. If you live outside he U.K though then I do not know how you can do it.

Witness a mafia hit. Then the government will not only give you a new name, they'll give you a new house and a new job, too! And there's no cost to you! All you gotta do is testify in court.

Or you can do it in a slightly more expensive way by going to your local state offices and filling out paperwork and paying a fee.

Depends where you live! In Scotland you can have a change of name deed signed by a justice of the piece and that is a legal document and does not cost anything.

It isn't cheap or free. It's a minimun of $180 in Michigan if you are over 21.

The procedures vary from state to state. You didn't say where you lived, so any answer you get here would be pure speculation. Here in California, the filiing fee is over $300.

You can call yourself anything you like as long as it is not with the intention to defraud.
