There is no comparison. Kobe is nowhere near the player that Bird was. It's almost laughable to compare the two. Kobe is a "shoot first, look for the open man later" statistic driven ball-hog, who is more worried about making the Sportscenter highlights than winning games. Bird could have scored many more points than what he did, but if someone was open, he got the ball to them. Thats what basketball is all about.
As for the post that said Jordan walked all over Bird and Magic in the 80's and called anyone who disagreed "retards", you must have been watching basketball in diapers at the time. It took Jordan SEVEN YEARS before he won his first championship, and he did it when Bird and Magic were retiring. His Bulls were constantly eliminated in the first or second rounds by the Celtics and Pistons. Hell, it took him four years just to get over the .500 mark.
In terms of stats, Bird owns Kobe in every catagory:
Points per game: Bird.. 24.3 Kobe.. 23.9
Rebounds per game: Bird.. 10 Kobe.. 5
Assists per game Bird.. 6.3 Kobe.. 4.5
FG % Bird.. .50% Kobe.. 45%
3 Point % Bird.. 38% Kobe.. 34%
FT % Bird.. 89% Kobe.. 83%
The only statistic that Kobe will probably pass Bird on might be points, mainly because Kobe started in the league at age 18, and Bird was 22 when he entered, so he has at least four extra years on Bird.
Bird would have won more than three championships in the 90's, especially playing with Shaq. People forget that Bird was constantly double and triple-teamed, so playing with Shaq would have made it much easier.
Kobe would have won the 3 championships in the 80's with the Celtics, but he would have been the backup guard behind Dennis Johnson and Danny Ainge. They would have brought him in for some instant offense, but after Ainge and DJ were rested, he'd be back on the bench.
Bird not only was the greatest all around player ever, but he made everyone around him a much better player. Kobe does not even belong in the same sentence as the Larry Bird.

Bird era? Team oriented? Kobe would not have well? Whoever said that is an assuming-to-know-it-all retard.. On that so-called Magic and Bird ear, there was someone whos style of play we can compare to Kobe today ,MJ23,and walked all over the Magic and Bird era kids.. And they said his individual style pf play will never get him Championships until he plays like Bird and Magic.. Well guess what? MJ DETHRONED Magic for his 1st Championship and got 5 more after that..
Anyways, Bird is Bird ,he is already up there, Part of the higher pedestals in history and can never be erased.. But Kobe will be more remembered, for like MJ Kobe's got style and charisma that can make James,Wade,T-mac and Vince want to follow (remmbr the leggings?)and will go thru adversity that will only make him stronger and motivate him even more to become the cold bloodied assasin that Jordan was..

I think the game was played different back then. I dont believe they would have let Kobe drive the lane a soften. It was more team oriented back then. Shaq would have definitely done well but not Kobe. Bird's play also suited the "team" concept where assists and rebounds were just as valued.

I agree with the answer above. Back when Bird played the sport was more team oriented and I don't think Kobe would have done as good if he played back then but I also don't think Bird would do as good if he played today. They are both tremendous players.

Gasol will be in the HOF. He replaced into putting up respectable stats in Memphis in the previous he replaced into traded, and his averages will bypass again up as Kobe performs a lot less. as well, there is better to creating the corridor then merely stats. Gasol has a ROY, a pair of earrings, some All-celeb appearances. All of those help construct a gamers acceptance, and help him get into the corridor. Gasol would get yet another ring, and he will just about actual be an All-celeb numerous better cases. With Yao damage and Stoudamire off playing in ny, who will he could compete with? besides, there is yet another element in making it to the HOF. You said McHale. evaluate his occupation stats (17.9ppg, 7.3reb, a million.7ast) to Gasol (18.9ppg, 9.0reb, 3.2ast). Why is McHale in the corridor? because voters known he replaced into the 2d maximum appropriate participant on a crew that gained distinct championships, and rewarded him for that accomplishment. Gasol receives a similar treatment at the same time as it really is his turn.

Kobe is the best player to ever touch a basketball in terms of scoring. Bird is not very athletic but was smart and can has mental quickness. His court vision and jumpshot were the Keys to his game. Ahh and his desire to win. Koby plays more for stats.
