London can be expensive to live in, but if you can afford it, it would be a good experience for you, because of the cultural diversity, interesting people, and still some kudos for anyone to work for a time in London.

I think the Brits like Australians (I certainly do I don't know whether they specifically like chefs, but I don't see why not!!

As a post script, because you are a chef, you probably wouldn't need to buy food in London, as you could eat while you worked as a perk of the work......so maybe you could afford somewhere nice to live.

Shared houses can be OK and a good experience. Some areas of London (eg the South East, places like Plumstead and Eltham) are less expensive than living in the centre, but then you would have to include the cost of travelling to the centre if you work in the city itself.

Hope you have a great time in London.

You can get a top bedsit in Earl's Court for around 600 ozzie dollars a week. The British like their Australian apprentice chefs lightly roasted and served with a fennel and garlic sauce.

If you come to work in London (or anywhere in the UK) as a chef, you may well be able to find somewhere that has live in accomodation, so you'd get paid less but your employer would pay your rent for you and you'd live in company housing. Apart from the fact that you're home and work are linked and losing your job means losing your house, it's a pretty good arrangement, it's definitely one of the cheapest. Typical rent in London goes from £250 per month, if you don't mind slumming it/sharing, up to about £400 per month for an average place, and then forever upwards (I vaguely remember seeing flats going for tens of thousands of pound per month). Check out the magazine TNT, it's set up for people like you (i.e. Australians travelling to London). You can get them for free at tube stations, or you can see it online:

Generally speaking British people like and get on well with Australians. They are seen by the British public in a stereotypical "Friendly, easy going person who likes beer" kind of way. Obviously we're talking about chefs here, and my experience of Chefs in England has been that they're mostly borderline psychotics who sometimes have difficulty knowing if they're supposed to be using the knife on you or the vegetable in front of them. Still, they're generally nice once you get them out of the kitchen and into the pub :)

I like Australians, and if they can cook then thats even better!

London is expensive, but that's compared to everywhere elses wages, if you live and work in London then it works out ok.
