It's a hard one - my family has viticulture grapes (for wine) and the deer just looooove the leaves and new baby vines. We've had some luck with a few things: Hang old pairs of nylons filled with human hair on the plants. My cousin is a hair stylist, so we just raid her sweepings for hair. Your own stylist may be more than willing to recycle her cuttings. Hang bars of perfumey deodorant soap (like Lever 2000 or Irish Spring, the stinkier the better) in mesh bags in the tree. Suspend CDs and DVDs (old ones, bad burns from your failed attempts, and AOL CDs are great) from the branches. The glint of sun off them may deter the pests. Our best deterrent has been putting the family dog out in the vineyard at night. He's not thrilled about it but the deer stay away.

I also have a problem with deer. The VERY best way to keep them out is witrh an electric fence. There are also a number of things that help to repel them. At garden stores or on the internet you can find products for repelling deer such as bottles of urine of predatory animals such as coyote. This is rather gross, but human urine will work too, your choice how you find a way to spread it around the tree (lol). I have also seen a product called "deer tape" that is a cloth tape with a deer repellent scent impregnated on it. Deer also do not like the smell of eggs. You can mix raw eggs with water and spray it on the tree. Also hanging bars of soap help to repel. Do not use cocoa butter soap....the deer will eat it. Try doing an internet search for "deer repellent" and you will find tons of information and products. Good luck!!

Fence at least 8' high. The scent of dogs help keep deer away. Keep the tree pruned so that there is no low lying fruit if possible or plant a taller variety

Deer are usually afraid of humans. To keep them out of an area you can alternate putting things around the area you want to keep them out of. Some of the things that have worked for me are; Milorganite ( a fertilizer made from sewer sludge), dried blood, coyote urine, and hair clippings or the hair from a shower drain placed in knee high stockings and tied. I have noticed that the deer will get used to a repellent and not be afraid of it, so you have to change things up every couple of weeks for the repellents to remain effective. I also had a friend who had her husband urinate at the corners of her garden to keep deer out, even though it sounds crude it seemed to work. If you are going to fence it needs to be at least 8' tall and placed far enough back so the deer can't push at it and reach the edible items they are after.

I have been told if you go to a barber shop and get some human hair & scatter it around the treee the deer will stay away.
I haven't tried it because my wife likes the "pretty deer" and would rather they have the apples then be scared off.

Lay chicken wire flat on ground around your tree, the deer will not walk on it and therefore not be able to reach apples.

You can obtain some LION manure or fur from your local zoo and put around the tree. The deer won't come near that scent!

I believe you actually could reason with the deer, if you could communicate with them -- they are not unintelligent animals -but not knowing their language, your best bet is to provide the scent of a mountain lion or other large predatory (feline) animal. I believe you can buy simulated scents. I've heard that ammonia works just as well (it's worth a try, and is probably much cheaper).
