Why do men naturally grow facial hair from puberty? Is it for appearance or something else?
Just that most things about our bodies have a reason.

PAUL1&2: Actually, I'm not asking why an individual would decide to shave or not shave.
Rather, in the same way that toes help a person stand, is there a practical purpose behind the beard itself?

It helps insulate the skin in cold weather. Some men grow them just because they can, some for vanity, some for 'fierceness' and others for "looks". Others wish to hide the features they have, such as weak chins, or bad skin. Some don't shave because shaving HURTS.
Some even grow them because the woman in their life LIKES it.

To the best of my knowledge, facial hair serves no real purpose other than decorative. However, the thickness of facial hair is linked to the levels of testosterone produced by a man's body, so a healthy beard could possibly be indicative of sexual performance.

we males have such genes which promote the production & secretion of the male sex hormone Testeosterone . the is responsible for male's musculice & hairy body as it basically accelerate & stimulate the hair production while females have genes which do allow testosteron to be secreted in their body but in minimun level & 1000000000 times less then male. so we have facial hairs.

It is to give your face warmth during the colder months. Also if not kept up it can be a flavor saver, and home for small animals...... LOL
