Can anyone give me step by step instructions for how to put on a sari, please. I bought one a few years ago and had cause to wear it to school recently for a themed day (I'm a teacher). I secureed it with many safety pins, but still felt unsecure! Would love to know how to wear it properly as they look so elegant. Thank you!

No, I was doing voluntary work in Nepal when I bought it

Thanx guys the websites were really helpful. I have a sari petticoat- I wear it frequently as outer wear! I found out that I was wrapping it round too much, and not tucking in enough fabric. I think I need to probably trim it some, it is, apparently, an extra long 1!

ders loaaaadsa diffrent styles u can do, bt basically 2 put it on d traditional way:
1. Tuck the end of the sari into your skirt or petticoat and wrap it around yourself once, making sure that your sari touches the floor.
2. Now start to make big pleats in the sari. When you have made about 10 pleats, turn them towards the left and tuck them into your skirt.
3. Now wrap the sari around yourself once more and bring it up under your right arm and over your left shoulder. You can keep this in place with a small brooch or safety pin.
this website has ideas for different wraps, depending on what sort of look you're after, and of course the occasion:

The sari is long strip of unstitched cloth, ranging from five to nine yards in length, which can be draped in various styles. The most common style is for the sari to be wrapped around the waist, with one end then draped over the shoulder. The sari is usually worn over a petticoat (called lehenga/ghagra in northern India and pavada/pavadai in the south) and a low-cut, short-sleeved, midriff-baring blouse known in north India as a choli.

Although I have never worn one myself I have seen many people put one on.
There shouldn't be a need for safety pins at all. Basically from what I remember you have a large amount of material (which I agree is extremely beautiful) and you just roll yourself up in it! The last peice should be placed over the right shoulder and should be long enough to reach at least halfway down your back.
You really need 2 people, one to hold the material as you spin in to it!!

Like I say, I don't wear one and it was many years ago that I saw someone else put one on. I hope I have helped just a little.

If you feel insecure, wear a thin piece of clothing (a skirt maybe) under your sari (don't wear the undergarment type but the one you usually wear outside) so if the sari slips off, you won't be embarrased. All the best!
p/s: you don't need safety pins OR EVEN two person to wear the sari =)
