Do you think it is an effective deterant?

Being exposed to death is the worst experience, the greatest suffering for a soul. A worst criminal is cleared of his bad karma when given a death sentence - and I do think that is the easier way out.
As for the effectiveness on the crime rate, a fear of death will not stop a criminal from being what he/she is - it will just force him to cover better.

Sure is. But I think the law is far too slow especially when the criminal is definitely identified and the case has been proven. There should no grounds for reappeal. Once found guilty, he should be dismembered according to the severety or gruesomeness of the crime and then finally executed. One lethal injection and he is gone - means he doesnt get to experience the pain nor trauma.

As for it being a deterrant, to some extent yes. But those mentally deformed or weird enough probably dont even know what is a death sentence and would anyway continue on the dreadful path of crime.

i think if the person is found guilty and there is no mistaking that they are guilty, then i believe "a life for a life", what else are they gonna be worried about when trying to avoid capture? a cushty life in prison where they get 3 meals a day? the victim didn't have a choice in dying, neither should the murderer!

and if they knew they were gonna get the death sentence when caught, maybe they wouldn't commit the murder in the first place. why should they get any sympathy?

I don't care if it deters anyone. I think it is a very good way to prevent and to punish. If a person takes a life ....they should be required to give theirs in exchange, They knew the penalty going in.

I'm against it for ethical and economical reasons. The ethical reasons are that one can never know for sure, 100% that someone is guilty, and an innocent person may be put to death. The economical reasons include the fact that it is far too expensive. It is cheaper for a person to be imprisoned for life in jail than executing them.

absolutely! it could be more effective if we can somehow get rid of the endless ' appeals' process and the plea bargaining. those who are on death row deserve to be there and should be executed NOW! in these extreme cases, life without parole should never be a consideration. they need to be lined up nut to butt as they say, waiting for their name to be called " NEXT!!". the death penalty is justifiable and is the only deterrent. we need to cut through all the paperwork and to keep the line moving.

I say keep it, re-instate it and use it more often. Criminals will think twice when they know they will die if they kill and/or inflict serious harm on anyone. A life sentence does not mean life and not to mention, its all of us flipping the bill to house, clothe and feed those criminals. I say send them to their creator who ever that maybe.

It won't be a deterrent until they start showing executions during prime time TV. An eye for an eye.

I beleive in the death penalty, but I also beleive we have to be very carfule to ensure the person is really guilty first.
