You tip per drink, not per hour! $1.00 per drink is standard.

The bartender is not losing any money because he is making minim wage just like the waitress and the cooks and even the people that clean off the tables. I usually leave 15%.
You could sit at the bar for 5 hours it doesn't make a difference..
Now, if your wife wants to leave 20% then have her do so..
But make sure its her money that she is throwing back on the bar...

Truthfully I have been a waitress and I can understand the tipping "ways." If you are there for 2-3 hours you should at least leave 30 percent which isnt too much but is fair because you are taking up the seats at the bar.

wow.have any of you ever tended bar?Tipping by the drink is standard yes, also greatly appreciated. Those who spend so much time figuring out percentages are probably considered bad tippers. And if you drink so little why not sit at a TABLE?Or just stay @home it's even cheaper.

Unless you see a sign that tells you the hourly rental fee for a seat then you tip by the drink.

as a good rule of thumb: $1.00 per drink. always.
Maybe that's different at the yatch clubs or martini bars downtown. (i steer clear of them anyways)
$1.00 per drink.

$1.00 per drink is good unless you like the top-shelf stuff, then maybe more. remeber: the better you tip, the quicker you'll get that next drink!
