I LOVE CRICKET! However, I think if you go by the number of people, you have to say The Super Bowl(American Football). If you go by the popularity throughout the world(meaning the number of countries that like this sport), then I would say cricket.

Cricket is by far the second most popular sport in the world, thanks to India! However, it actually isn't the second most watched EVENT. I am sad to say, FIFA World cup attracts the most viewers, estimated to be a staggering 5.3 billion for this years world cup!!! Then comes the Olympic 100m, and then the Cricket world cup final.....
Sad, I know, Ponting is much more impressive than Landon Jones or whoever does that 10 second thing these days....

I would have to say Tennis. Cricket and Rugby, although incredibly popular with their fans, are not greatly followed by others. American sports like baseball and us football is mostly only followed in USA and hasn't yet really become international. Tennis is followed throughout the world. Everyone follows their country through major tournaments like wimbledon, and everyone can name some top tennis players. During Wimbledon, if you own a TV then it is likely to be turned on to the tennis.
If it is not Wimbledon then I would have to say the Olympics. The whole world follows what happens, even if it isn't too exciting; people want their country to do well and want to support their country.

Hi,
Because of statistics I think most watched sports event after Fifa World Cup it's the Olympic games. At the last Olympic games (Athens, 2004) 201 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated. Popularity in the Games reached soared to new highs as 3.9 billion people had access to the television coverage.
I have edited a top 10 ranked sports this list to only include the Olympic sports.

# 2][Basketball][400,000,000][211]
# 3][Table Tennis][300,000,000][186]
# 4][Soccer/Football][242,000,000][204]
# 5][Badminton][200,000,000][147]
# 6][Tennis ][60,000,000][191]

The Olympics, The FIFA World Cup and Formula 1 Grand Prixs are the three most watched sports events. I believe them to be in that particular order

Olympics, Formula 1 + the European Cup.
Average viewing figures for a Formula1 race is around 354 - 400million worldwide.
Viewing figures I've been able to find for the Olympics, estimate about 1 - 3.7billion viewers worldwide.
No mention anywhere on the Internet on viewing figures for cricket, other than 4million in the UK
