Usually the answer goes like this:
Atom is the smallest possible particle of a chemical element that retains its chemical properties.
A subatomic particle is a particle smaller than an atom such as electrons, protons, and neutrons. Protons and neutrons are actually composite particles, made up of quarks.
Problem is, you can not actually call a quark a thing as basiccally it is energy. But I'd call it 'a thing' as thing is a word that could mean 'energy' if we agree it could be :)

Believe me. Heart is the tiniest single thing in this world. Heart of a person can be the biggest as well as the tiniest living thing of the world coz it depends person to person. Its hard for me to justify........

Do you mean the smallest thing we can see, or the smallest thing we can't see but we're pretty certain is there?
Smallest we can see is one photon (light particle). Can't see but know it's there: a quark.
