Hi Alison, in my opinion the best place to head for would be the mountains, up towards Ladakh from Delhi via Himachal. It is spectacular and memorable to say the least. Have been there many times as i organise tours on motorbikes there and would highly recommend going there. Rest of India will be in the middle of monsoon and too wet to enjoy or appreciate. One can get a tan at those altitudes but not anything like what you would get at sea level. If you need any more help or advice would be glad to help out. Cheers and all the best with your travel plans.

Hi, to find out the best places to go and ALL the information you will need is in the LONELY PLANET GUIDE TO INDIA.
It has absolutely everthing you need to know about india, also end of July is really hot so yes you will DEFO get a tan!!!!
Also if you buy some food from stalls, dont eat anything that has been cooked before you get there, they will sometimes tell you food has just been freshly cooked, but be adamant and ask them to cook it in front of you.
Have fun

If you are travelling to India in July you are going to get tan. Temperature up there in more that 45degree's.
First I want to for how long you are going to India if it is is month or few weeks it is not enough for you than. Because in India every state have something that you can go visit.

Try the beaches in North Karnataka - Gokarna (Kudle is bliss! Om is crowded now that there's a resort there), Karwar has some virgin beaches too. Goa may be rainy, so you probably won't get a great tan! It would be sensible to spend some time in the Himalayas - Dharamsala (home of the Dalai Lama), Leh, Ladak - the sun's so close you'll have sun-kissed cheeks! Remember Indian summers aren't for the weak hearted!

As long as you're in India during the summer months, you're bound to get a tan, even when you're just having a stroll in the streets.
My preferred places in India are in the north as they are cooler than in the south. You can fly into Delhi and visit the Taj Mahal at Agra. You could go north to Simla and on to the other hill stations (e.g. Dharamsala) on the himalayas. To go somewhere higher and peaceful, go to Ladakh and do some trekking there.
If you really crave the heat, go to the state of Rajasthan, the desert region of India, and enjoy the ancient architecture of palaces and temples. (Just be careful of the all-you-can-eat fruit buffet in Pushkar, everyone gets sick there! :D)
