because they are not breathing yet. oxygen is delivered through the umbical cord via blood, just like their "food". they actually do swallow the fluid once in a while, but a baby's first breath does not happen until after birth.

In essence they share the mother's circulatory system via the umbilical chord. Something that has always puzzled me is why people fear the water so much when they get out.

babies do not need to breathe until they leave the womb, so they have to learn very quickly when they come out.
