ok so i think mtv or vh1 did a survey like this earlier on in the year.

Coldplays "yellow " i believe topped the list of 100 greatest lyrics with "look at the stars, look how they shine for you"... which in my opinion isnt all that great (btw i am a coldplay fan and have nothing against them!)

......so what is the greatest lyric of all time? or for that matter your own personal favourite lyric?

there are so many song's with lyrics that really strike chord's with me, i couldn't really choose . It would depend what mood i'm in but that set of coldplay lyrics doesn't do much for me.
How about
"master's of war " bob dylan
"Imagine" John Lennon
"Emerald" Thin LIzzy ( down from the hills came the marching men with, with their shields and their swords to fight the fight they believed to be right ,to overthrow the OverLord's)
"brick in the wall" Pink Floyd
"Purple Haze" Jimi Hendrix
"rockin in the free world " Neil Young
"Civil War" Guns n Roses
"the show must go on" Queen which freddie wrote when he knew he was dying
I could go on but my head is wrecked as was on the beer last night.

I know someone already said this, but 'all in all you're just another brick in the wall' by pink floyd is seriously the best lyric ever.
I agree with you on the coldplay thing. I mean, they're great, but thet lyric is nothing special. nice song though.

Hey Jude by The Beatles. The first part goes like this:
'Hey Jude, don't make it bad. Take a sad song and make it better. Remember to let her into your heart, Then you can start to make it better.'
You might recognise it because it was the closing song at the Live 8 Festival- 'make poverty history' last year which was by Bob Geldof. The song was performed by Paul McCartney the last surviving member of the band.
I love the song because it grew on me and reminds me of those good days that I had.

The lyrics to Joe Tex's disco anthem "Ain't Gonna Bump No More With No Big Fat Woman" take some beating, they are about a guy being pounced on by fat girl in a disco and made to dance with her vigorously until she accidently injures him.

I think thats a subjective question but if you want to hear awsome lyrics, I suggest listening to Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan or even Johnny Cash

Billy Bragg "Greetings For the New Brunette" which has the famous "How can you lie back and think of England, when you don't even know who's in the team"

Athough recently he has changed the last words to "who's managing the team"

The whole of the Holy Bible album by manic street preachers

".... hurt myself to get pain out -power produces desire, the weak have none -there's no lust in this coma, even for a fifty -solitude, solitude, the 11th commandment -the only certain thing that is left about me -there's no part of my body that has not been used..."

Dead leaves and the dirty ground by The White Stripes. I love the song. 2 favourite lines (not consecutive)

If you can hear a piano fall, you can hear me coming down the hall
..and every breath that is in your lungs is like a tiny little gift to me

Anything by Paul Simon - he's the most intelligent lyricist of our generation and creates such beautiful songs... "The Mississippi delta is shining like a national guitar..." how evocative is that!?
