Okay, two videos were made for that one song. The one I'm refering to shows clips from the movie. It was an old movie cuz it was in black & white. Something about a soldier that lost all of his limbs, sight, hearing and ability to speak. I think that movie was an inspiration for the song. Love the song but I don't know the name of the movie. Much appreciation to those that tell me. Thanks!

The music video was directed by Michael Salomon, Steve Goldmann and Bill Pope and debuted on MTV on January 20, 1989. The video is almost entirely in black & white, and features the band performing the song in a warehouse. It features dialogue and several scenes from the movie Johnny Got His Gun, written and directed by Dalton Trumbo. Timothy Bottoms can be seen starring as Joe Bonham, the main character. Bonham is confined to a hospital and is sustained by a tube after suffering catastrophic injuries from a mortar shell (although a landmine is mentioned as the cause of injury in the song lyrics) during the first World War. Although he survived, the explosion caused incredible loss of limbs, including both his arms and legs, along with most of his face including his eyes, nose, ears leaving him blind, deaf, mute and almost completely immobile. The movie was nominated for a Golden Globe, but was not the original inspiration for Hetfield's lyrics. It was only after the song had been recorded that they learned about the similarities between the stories of their song and Trumbo's movie.

Thus Metallica bought the rights to Johnny Got His Gun so they would be able to use it exclusively for the video for "One". Three versions of the "One" music video were made - the first (the longest) contained scenes of both the band and scenes from the movie. The second was simply a shortened version of the first and the third contained only the band performing the song (without any scenes from the movie).
