Actually there are so many kinds of business reporters, it's not possible to easily state a single function. I beleive from your details, you are specifically referring to investigative business reporters.
One aspect common to all reporters is that they have to be able to sell their work, and it must be accurate. There have been several prominent reporters in the news lately who have been compromised.
The function is to let their readers know what developments are occuring in the business they are reporting on. That's about it.
