You'll need Real Player if you want to play files that are specifically encoded for it. However, Real Player isn't really ideal, as it isn't a very efficient program.
You can download a program called Real Alternative, which lets you play the same media files without having to install Real Player. Real Alternative is also a lot more efficient than Real Player, as it loads quicker, doesn't run background processes and uses fewer system resources.

Having used both the Windows Media Player and Real Player I'd go for the former. I would also agree it's not that user friendly and each time you connect to it you get those annoying 'pop-up' ads. For me, personally, I would go for the Windows version as it seems easier to use and the latest version - 11.0 - does all the things Real Player can do anyway.

Real player isn't very good at all. Use it only and ONLY IF you want to play .rm files.
These files are highly compressed and are completely incompatible with other players, except the real alternative.
