Congrats! I just had a baby 4 months ago, so here's what we needed/got:
1. Lots of diapers. They come in sizes, so make sure you get newborn sizes.
2. Receiving blankets. The hospital might give you some of these, but get some of your own to wrap your baby tightly in for the first couple months.
3. Newborn clothes. Not little outfits, because newborns are too fragile for those. Get clothes that are easy to change diapers in (i.e., they have snaps/zippers and come off easily).
4. Stroller. This is a necessity for travelling around in. You can also get a jogging stroller if you like to go running and want to take your baby with. Make sure the jogging stroller has good protection from sun/rain, though!
5. Crib/Basonette. This is where the baby will sleep! Some people like their baby to sleep in their room with a basonette, so if that's you, get one that rocks. In my case, our baby has always slept in a crib in another room. It's adjustable so that he can sleep in it for a few years. You will also need a mattress for the crib, along with some baby sheets.
6. Baby monitors. You'll probably want at least 2 speaker-things to put in 2 different rooms. I also recommend getting some that have lights that light up according to audio levels.
7. Changing table. This is so handy for putting baby's clothes in, diaper supplies, and other things. Not only that, though, but you can change your baby on this! You will also need a little mattress that fits this, along with a waterproof cover (in case he/she wets on the table).
8. Baby wipes. These are for changing diapers. I recommend getting a warmer for this because it keeps the wipes warm so that when you go to use them on your baby, the baby isn't shocked by a cold wipe.
9. Pacifiers. Lots of them. Make sure you get ones appropriate for newborns. And put them all over your house - you never know when you may need one!
10. Bottles with size 1 nipples. If you're going to formula feed, you will need formula as well (or if you're going to breast pump and put the milk in bottles).
11. Car seat. This should have been #1 because you can't take the baby home from the hospital without a car seat! I recommend getting one that fits your stroller. Babies 'R Us has tons of strollers with car seats in them (this is where we got ours).
12. Boppie. This is a U-shaped cushion thingy that you put around your waist and under the baby when feeding. It's so comfortable and helpful for feeding, so I highly recommend it!
13. Burp rags. Lots of them. They can get dirty very quickly. Bibs are also very good to have around in addition to burp rags.
That's all I can think of right now. Good luck! :)

Some great answers. Everyone has their own likes, that's for sure! :)
I did not use a changing table. During our Lamaze classes, the instructor told us to change the baby on the floor. You never need to worry about him/her rolling off! And it's a great way for you to tone up your muscles. You really don't need more baby furniture.
Pacifiers. Never used those either. Nothing more unattractive than a baby with a "cork" in their mouth! There's a reason a baby cries... figure out what's wrong, don't just plug up their mouth.
I breastfed both my daughters until they were 2 yrs. I never gave them bottles. I did become engorged (several times!) but found that a hot shower and two hands pretty much took care of that.
If you can borrow a bassinet, then do that. The baby isn't in it that long and they're not cheap. Neither is the bedding for it.
You CAN put babies in outfits. They're not that fragile that they're going to break if you take them out of their sleepers. Why do you think they make baby outfits. (that was the silliest piece of advice I saw).
Diaper Bag... couldn't do without it! As they grow and you have to take more things to entertain them, you'll want a large one.
You can spend a ton of money if you have a ton of money to spend. Or you can ask around and get ideas from other moms. Babies are expensive, but they don't need to break the bank.
Go to garage sales this summer and start picking stuff up! You'll find great bargains.

You may not need everything that are on these lists but a lot of these things are really helpful. Of course you'll need the basics like a bassinet/crib, changing pad, wipes, diapers, etc. but this list gives you other items. See links in sources... good luck! Also, if you go to a local store (some people like Target), you should register for these items and then people can go and the items come off the list as you purchase.

I had my first child almost a year ago and I felt the same way then as you do now. It can be a little unnerving to the first time parent and a little mind boggling since you've never had to buy these things before.
But all the advice given above is great.
You definately need the basics....
diapers, wipes, clothes/bed clothes, pacifiers, bottles, breastpump (if you intend on breastfeeding--its very helpful if you get engorged), crib/playpen, crib sheets, blankets etc.

go to a baby store, look at all the baby stuff, figure out what each thing is for, then figure out if you're going to need the object for your new baby.
*hint* lots of diapers, wipees, & onsies!
don't forget the formula!
and... plenty of film! if you don't own a camera, get a bunch of disposable cameras! You'll be happy you did!
MOST IMPORTANT... Get the proper carseat for your newborn or the hospital won't let you take your baby home!
Not sure if it's like that where you live but here in Ohio it is.
