Firefox has always outperformed IE in benchmarks. However, I believe it uses more system resources than IE, so it could simply be slowing down your computer.

In addition to speed, firefox has tabbed browsing (available in pretty much every modern browser except IE6), better security, built in pop-up blocking, built in search, RSS readers and more.

I actually think Opera might be a bit better (I go back and forth between the two), but at the time Firefox came out, Opera wasn't a free download (it is now), which would explain why firefox got all the attention.

The biggest reason not to use IE of course is security:
" As of May 28, 2006, Secunia reports 101 vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer, 21 of which are unpatched. In contrast, Mozilla Firefox, the main competitor to Internet Explorer, is reported to have only 31 security vulnerabilities, of which 4 remain unpatched . Opera, another competitor to Internet Explorer, has 13 vulnerabilities and none of them remain unpatched."

So, the bottom line is, Firefox is so popular because it was the first free alternative to IE that really took off, and the world needs an alternative to IE.

Initially it was faster and more secure, but with the latest release of FireFox Builds - there is severe problems that are going unresolved. The program takes up unncessary amount of CPU usage and memory - causing your system to run slower, and their is still a very easy way to cause the Browser to crash. I'm using firefox right now, but I had to rebuild and compile it from the source in order to make it a bit safer.

Try creating an html page with a million letters in the title tags

eg:
-put a million + letters here

load it in firefox and the browser will crash

If your looking for ease of use and are used to IE you could try another free browser called AVANT. It too is faster than IE, has built in pop up blocker, more options over all and the full screen operation is just the best. Also you don't need to re-download all the plugins to play flash and run java applets n stuff when you start using it and it imports your favourites list from IE, too.

It stops a lot more brouser hijackers, viruses, pop ups.

You can see all sorts of data from the website your viewing by using tools/page info.

Tabbed brousing is a personal fave of mine, instead of getting lots of individual windows at the bottom, you can hold ctrl when you click a link and you will get a tab at the tob of your firefox brouser rather than at the bottom.

It's also a lot more reliable and more secure and you can also download many plug ins for it that let you use custom made features that people have made, such as a programme to let you download all the links on one page in one click.

It won't be any faster than I.E as the page speeds will only go as fast as their host will allow you to download from them.

do know why your firefox is slower - certainly mine is a lot quicker than ie

the good thing a bout firefox you don't get them annoying pop ups all the time

also has tabbed browsing

you can customise the browser so much with added gadgets

for sometime i have been using firefox - but i have just changed to opera

this one is quicker than firefox - has all the abilities of firefox but with added extras - email add in - tabbed broswing - voice recognition - torrwent downloaded - thumb nail preview - plus lots more

my favorite right click on the desk top - nd with the mouse direction you can browse back forward etc etc - only alittle thing but once you get used to it saves time

think i'll stick with this one for a while

I don't like Firefox either. I do prefer Opera, Firefox is slow and uses too much cpu.

I too wonder why people like this not that good browser that much.

On my husband's computer it works a lot faster than IE. Also, it isn't susceptible to a lot of the viruses people create for Microsoft products.

And Firefox has lots of really cool add-ons. One that my husband is particularly fond of is StumbleUpon (www.stumbleupon.com). It's great for surfing and finding really good sites on your chosen topics.

It does open slower, initially. Nothing is wrong with her computer, by the way, it probably (like mine) might not have a ton of ram in it. It definetly loads slower when you first open the browser, as for page loads I have noticed a difference on certain sites, but nothing major to note.

You have something wrong in your system if Firefox is slower for you than IE.
