Believing in women's empowerment is in no way hating men. Quite contrarily, when women have control over their lives and are not discriminated against, the men around them have much more enjoyable lives themselves. There is no reason why men should enjoy privileges that women don't. If you believe in a free and fair society, you must believe in people's empowerment. Gender equality does not mean sameness in identities but rather equity in terms of opportunities. If you have a mom, a sister, a daugther, female friends... surely you want them to live fulfilling lives, no?
The overwhelming majority of feminist are respectful and only want women's conditions to improve. Why do we bash people who want to make society better?

I don't think there's anything wrong with being a feminist at all. In fact, I think it's a great thing. However, the fact of the matter is that in our society "feminists" are equated with "angry man-hating lesbians". This makes a lot of women afraid to describe themselves as being "feminists" for fear of the social stimagization that goes with it. Until the general public recognizes that this is a vast miscategorization and unwarranted stereotype, it will still exist, and it will influence a lot of women away from wanting to describe themselves as being part of the feminist movement.

In addition, a lot of men are still intimidated by women who are self confident, know what they want, and go after it, much less women who demand to be treated as equals. It makes it easier for them to call us names rather than stop viewing us as sex objects who are here to cook and clean for them while they go out and "earn the living for the little lady".

I know that's not the answer you might be looking for, but it's the best and truest one I can give you.

Yes, well, the traditional values of western society delegate women to a position of subordination to men - you're not just going for equal rights for women when you're a feminist, you're also going against those traditional values. Of course some people wouldn't agree. Especially the beta and omega males.

Well, opinions differ. I can not answer your question properly wihout offending you, so I will just say that I personally prefer an intelligent woman, not some empty headed girl who just wants to hop into bed. Open mindedness a plus. I would say the big issue where feminists are tangling with America is abortion. That is just an objective view from someone who is not a part of the debate. I think feminism is a good thing. I am a part of a female supremacist group myself, which is perhaps taking feminism to the next level.

Affirmative action is not to slant the playing field in favor of women or minorities. It's to attempt to paliate a little bit to some structural inequalities that would otherwise prevent (or discriminate against) women or minorities wanting to reach these positions. There is no such thing as an equal playing field...especially when educational have been founded and operated by white men for hundreads of years.

There's actually two streams to feminism. One promotes equality between the genders and one just wants more power for women.

The former I would support wholeheartedly, though I would call it 'humanism' instead of feminism. (any irony there folks!)

The latter is just power for the sake of power. I think that this kind of feminism actually does more to hurt the cause than anything. I think that kind of thinking isn't good for anybody.

PC language does get out of hand and generally I don't like it but when it actually represents a shift in thinking instead of just a euphimistic substition (dumbing down) then it is of some value.

There's a difference between feminism, and "femenazism". The former is what you're tlaking about, the latter is extreme feminism, almost like these women are on a vendetta on the males species for their position in society. The idea is to not be equal, but "more equal than you", dominance.

But then again, I think it's selfish for any person to try to "fight for rights" but for their own specific group, and not for everyone and anyone.

Because some people are not as confident of their own identities then they want people to think. Like a bully pics on others to feel better about himself, only a weaker man would wish a woman to sit down and be less.

Feminism didn't make things better, it barely made things equal. and we, as women lost too much in that exchange...
we lost the right to stay home and raise our children. we lost the privilege of having door opened for us, and all the other chivalrous things that men used to do for women. we lost reverence and the quiet dignity that came with being the bringers of life. we lost our pedestal. "Mom" used to be a powerful word. now it's just as vacant as dad. having to work 40+ hours to get by. it's pathetic and a shame. before we were"equal" we were better than that and didn't appreciate it. now we have no better value than before.. if anything, we have less.

Amen to that....

The problem is that many "feminists" just like to make a war about anything that happens to them, even when they're wrong... even claiming women are better than men in all areas (that WAS our secret... now it's gonna be harder to control you, guys... haha, just kidding), there's no better sex, we complement each other, and we should have the same rights, period.
