I suspect that my work place uses a proxy to control what websites and instant messaging programs I can use. Is there any way to connect to this proxy and configure it so that my Yahoo messenger will work? I have tried connecting to the default gateway IP, but that doesn't offer any configuration options.

I have administrative rights on the client computer I am on, but I suspect that the proxy server is not local but at the ISP's location.

Doubt it, if it is a proxy server it is a DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) The administrator has all the internet rights. If they don't want you to use that you can't!!

No, I think you can't do that since you does not have the administator right. However there are way which you can overcome this limitation. Use of online proxy server. There are many available on the net and one of the better is this, http://www.askunix.com/
Just visit this website and paste any URL of the website which you wish to access into this website and you can start browsing.
If you wish to access online messenger, you can use messenger online. One of the website which let you do this is http://www.e-messenger.net/
If you could not access this link due to this proxy limitation set by the company, paste the url into the online proxy site and access it through there.
But by following all this, there is risk of being found out. By then you there is consequences to face and you might lost your job because of it. Please reconsider and think through it before following this method.
Hope this help.:)

If they don't want you having certain programs on your work computer, I wouldn't do it. Even if you get around the system, they are still going to find out what you're doing since everything goes through the server. You could get fired....

Getting a fast working proxy and spoof your address would be easier.
