The truth of the matter, beyond the World Cup... is that while the USA is good, they are not as strong as their FIFA ranking.
The USA had won its last 5 consecutive official matches before the World Cup, but had done so against CONCACAF competition. While any of us could respect such a result against Mexico, that result seems less impressive against Jamaica and Honduras.
In the computerized rankings formula, you effectively beat whomever the teams you beat have beaten; and you lose to those who beat the the teams you lose to.
Hence, if you pile on the wins, no matter the circumstances, your FIFA ranking can skyrocket.
To answer your question about potential 2nd round matchups, I would not like to face either Holland or Argentina. England will really have to improve offensively to win either of those matchups.
And, I believe you and I agree. No one at this moment looks as dangerous as Argentina. They seem in good enough form to win the Cup outright.
I think I would be happier to see Holland in round 2!

America will be fudged and quickly forgotten if they do not improve 100% from the last debacle. Many of the players were over-awed with the ocassion, nervous with no commitment to win the game. The only good thing that came out out it was the massive turnout and support of Americans at the stadium. Team USA was a huge disappointment - not by losing but by their listless attitude to their play. Disregard FIFA's ranking - it's trash.
Beating minnows in football to qualify for the WC (Jamaica, Panama, Honduras) would most likely be the cause of USA's poor performances; perhaps they should travel more often to play European and African teams. How else can they improve? Credentials of Bruce Arena? Who's he in football? Or else FIFA need to relook the regional qualifying system - definitely not fairplay!

Everyone was expecting them to be rubbish but the truth is they've been pretty impressive from the off. I'm not sure their No 5 ranking in the world is accurate but hats off. Yeah, they're pretty good.
England v Argentina? I've not seen Argentina lately. They can be lax. Generally speaking, though, like most teams they're probably farked gainst Argentina. Sure.

American is highly ranked (No. 5 as of May) because they won a lot of games to teams like Jamica, Panama, and Hondurus in qualifying matches.
But Euro and South Americans team have a lot of world cup experience.

"Soccer" is not yet part of US culture due to the money that is invested in "Football" and basketball. It is a threat to the sports establishment which is why the powers that be try to depict it as a girl's sport. Check out Junior Sports Illustrated if you don't believe it--soccer and girls are always paired. Against Italy? What an unlucky draw. My guess is that they will lose 3-0 but I will still be suporting them.

The F.I.F.A. ranking system is a load of sh*t...America are average at soccer but wont be able to survive the world cup and are certainly not 5th in the world......
