Its location in the on the edges of tectonic plates, specifically the pacific, Eurasian and Australian regions is the main reason for the frequent earthquakes and the following tsunamis. Many of the islands have volcanoes, - 66 volcanoes- which are contributing for the movement of the plates and earthquakes.

Actually, indonesia, like japan, lies on the ring of fire, where a lot of plates cross and tectonic movement is common.
Not quite the same with singapore, thus earthquakes are much more common in indonesia.
