I think JPEG format is the most popular, this format is commonly for photos or pictures with gradient colors.
GIF is loosing popularity nowadays, this format is most suitable for images with less colors and straight lines. has animated feature.
PNG is gaining popularity, too many things to say on this format. Most people use this format to replace GIFs
For animations, Flash is the most used on the web.

JPEG = You Lose Quality In The Image
BMP = Keep The Quality But The File Size Is Big Once Saved
GIF = Moving Anitmation In Some Cases But Not Many People Use This Anymore And I Find The Old Cartoons Gif Image Make A Website Look sloppy.
PNG = Keeps Quality And Keeps File Size Small You Can Use A Number Of Software Programs To Save To This File Type Including MSPAINT On Your PC
