Depends on the transfer service (Bank, Western Union, etc.) and the countries or origin and to where it's sent. There are some delay issues, especially in countries where crime or fraud is rampant.

Depending on each individual country and your own countries governing regulations of handling monies. Personal money wires may take a bit but business monies would take longer due to laws protecting investors-taxes-and accountability. With more and more identy theft and in office theft, it also protects the company.

western union takes only a couple of seconds.
an interbank wiretransfer takes a few days because it goes through a clearing process and be verified upon receipt.
use western union otherwise have someone deposit some dough in your bank account in the US so you can pick it up through an ATM.
