When most people first think of H2C2H3O2, they think of vinegar. However, the actual percentage of acetic acid (from global production) used to make vinegar is very minimal.

Most of the acetic acid produced are used as chemical reagents to produce other synthetic chemicals.

TOP 3 USES OF ACETIC ACID ARE:

Majority of Acetic acid ever produced (40~45%) are used for synthesis of vinyl acetate monomer. Vinyl acetate monomer are further used to make cheap sweeteners, plastics and adhesives.

Another (25~30%) of globally produced Acetic acid is used to make Acetic anhydride. Acetic anhydrides are commonly used for cellulose acetate, a synthetic textile also used for photographic film. Acetic anhydride is also a reagent for the production of aspirin, heroin, and other pharmaceuticals.

The third major use of Acetic acid is to make acetate esters (15~20%). The major esters of acetic acid are commonly used solvents for inks, paints and coatings.

OTHER USES FOR ACETIC ACID:

Synthetic fibers
Plastic
Explosives
Herbicide
Pesticide
Packaging
magnetic tape
Perfumes
Vinegar/Pickling
polyester
Solvent
Soap bath to develope film
Limescale remover
Treatment for Box Jellyfish sting
Dye
Thickeners for drilling mud
Treatment for outer ear infections
Disinfectant
Bacterial / fungal growth suppressant
pharmaceuticals
eletroplating
astringent
Water Treatment
liniment
nonflammable motion-picture film
lacquers
inorganic salts
artificial flavor
wart removal
expectorant
laundry soap
vitamins
antibiotics
cosmetics
resins
hormones
latex coagulant
oil-well acidifier
solvent for gums/rubber

That should be just about fifty...

1. Used to pre-treat (pickle) stainless steel after welding to prevent corrosion (termed pickle and passivation)
2. Used to make Ethyl acetate (by reaction with ethanol). Ethyl Acetate is a good solvent - often used in electronics to clean circuit boards off flux and many other solvent applications
3. Used to make Butyl acetate - also a good solvent and co-monomer in plastics
4. React it with Chlorine to get chloro acetic acid - also a useful organic reagant
5. Used to make cellulose acetate (a transparent plastic like material)
6. React it with salicylic acid to make acetyl salicylic acid (Asprin)
7. React with proponol to get propyl acetate - another useful ester
8. React it with ethylene glycol or propylene glycol to make ethylene glycol acetate or propolyene glycol acetate
9. Acetic acid also has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties
10. Used in the photographic developing process
11. Used to dissolve calcium/magnesium scale (in water heaters, kettles, etc)
12. Reacted to form vinyl acetate which is also a useful monomer for the manufacture of poly vinyl acetate
13. Used to make sodium acetate which has anti-bacterial/anti fungal properties and is used in a bunch of applications
14. Uses of vinigar (dillute acetic acid) - flavourant in foods
15. Vinigar can be used to pickle foods
16. Can be used to make pigments (eg Copper acetate, Iron Acetate)
17. Rust remover - Iron oxide is not water soluable, but reacts to form Iron acetate that dissolves in water
18. Acetic acid is a good solvent itself (fairly polar) and can be used in many organic sysenthesis reactions
19. Used to make lead Acetate (sugar of lead) - in days of old an artifical sweetner.
20. Used to make ammonium acetate - a pesticide.
21. React with detergent range Alcohol to make Sodium dodecyl acetate
22.Used to make Nickel Acetate - a chemical used in the textile industry
23. It can be used as a pre-curser in the manufacture of contact lenses
24. Used to make Magnesium acetate
25. Used in the manufacture of many differnet pharmaceuticals

Well... half way there - now someone else can get a turn. Hope that helps....

No way dude! Head & Shoulders, intensive treatment is the way to go. It comes in a dark blue bottle. Three days of wash rinse, and repeat, and your dandruff is toast. Gonzo. Oh, yeah I forgot to mention, it smells like 3000% better than vinegar, which will do nothing for your dandruff.
