It comes from the Greek name Alexandros. Alexander is the latin translation of Alexander.

In Greece Alexandros is used as a first name still and is very common. In other countries Alexander is used both as a first name and as a surname.

It means defender of mankind or warrior. Andros both in ancient and in modern Greek means man and ex means "of". All together gives you the meaning on the name.

The most famous Alexander is the Alexander the Great the king of Macedonia (His kingdom was in North Greece with the capital Pella a few klms from Salonika). Lived from 356-323BC and conquered the largest part of the known world of his time. He reached even India and Afghanistan.
