The Republic of Turkey was created after World War One with the collpase of the Ottoman Emperor. The Republic's founder and leader for many years was Mustafa Kemal- Ataturk- Father of Modern Turkey. He created a secular state. Very prophetic given all the problems with the role of Mullahs in modern Iran, etc.

Their Constitution is based on Swiss civil law. While the official religion is Islam, there are no religious holidays and religious discrimination is unlawful. The army is quick to threaten a coup whenever the radical Muslim leaders become vociferous.
The Turks I have met are great people. They were allies in Korea and deserve better treatment by the State Dept. than what they've had.
