I assume that this is more for marriage than divorce.

A single emotion is required for long lasting relationships. This is unconditional love and without this, no relationship can last.

With unconditional love, several other emotions can be felt. These are respect, which brings trust, sensitivity which joins empathy and compassion, and honor, which leads to devotion.

Unconditional love also does not allow jealousy, arrogance, overextended pride or dependence.

It's the "connected" emotions that hold it together. Too often, only one partner burdens the load of holding it together. Passion for life, inviting mysteries of tomorrows, unconditional love, respect, giving and accepting/receiving. All of these should be factored in and rotated when special circumstances call for it. Keeping the "fire" changes with the length of the relationship because there is either constant growth together on the same path or there is individual growth in two different directions. Beware of uncommon ground sneaking in! Oh yeah..."fun" is a good one to keep around too. Have a great weekend!

The two answers above mine are very good, and both are to be commended. I'd simply like to add that having an emotionally stable personality, and being comfortable with your own emotions are also valuable.

You have to have trust, honesty and respect. You build a strong foundation with those things and fill it with love. Love can't stand alone without the other things. Many people have loved and lost because they didn't have or maintain the above things to keep the foundation solid.
