He had lupus as a child, which left him with facial scarring and hair loss.

I always wondered about that too. I don't recorder now If I got this information from someone or if I read it somewhere.
It seems he got it by a ritual from a tribe or group in Africa that he used to be part of(something religious I think) and I remember have heard also that he doesn't like to talk about it when is questioned about his scars.

I always thought it was from bad acne- I never knew he had lupus.
