My PC is loaded with media center.I wish to do professional multitrack studio recording and was advised that media center was not compatible with the recording software I want to use.But XP was compatible.I have a disk to load xp, but wasnt sure if I would lose my other operating system as I use it for other media purposes.

Yes, ideally you partition your hard drive into a C: and D: (or more) drives. Then install one version to one drive and another to the other (just read the screens carefully and you'll see where to change it during setup). XP will create a boot menu automatically for you.

But why do you want to? They are essentially the same thing, Media center just has a few added bells and whistles to help with video.

ADDED COMMENT!!!
Who advised you? Did you try it? Software companies often say they don't support this or that - doesn't mean it won't work. For example, it's not unusual for CD Burning software to say they don't support Windows Server, but in reality, I've used both major products flawlessly for years on servers.

And you don't have to start over as another poster says, but you SHOULD buy yourself another hard disk drive and install it - then install XP to that - IF you still need to.

(In theory you can install XP to a different folder and it will be ok - but in the past, with different versions of Windows, there have been little issues that crop up from mixing the Program Files folders of two Windows versions).

ADDITIONAL COMMENT:
Did they say what problems? I can't say ABSOLUTELY, you can run it, but I would expect it to work fine. Otherwise, we've given you options for installing XP Pro. If you're going to get the software anyway, get it and try it. If it doesn't work, you'll be setting up a dual boot.

You can run two operating systems on your computer. However, if your hard drive is not already divided into at least two partitions, you will have to start from scratch. This means reformating your hard drive and reinstalling all your programs. Here's an article that gives you pretty good information and step-by-step instructions.
