If they are not identical that means that your body released 2 eggs at the same time, and both were fertilized which causes non-identical twins or fraternal twins. Releasing two eggs doesn't always happen, but for some woman it can.

Identical twins is caused by one egg being fertilized by one sperm and then the egg separates into two identical embryos.

Nature dictates that the human species produce only one egg in a menstrual cycle. However, there are exceptions. Sometimes, you do end up with two eggs and therefore, giving chance for two sperms to do its job. You will end-up with non-identical twins. This is the kind of twins you'd naturally get if you conceive at a later age or use fertility enhancing therapy.

The other type - identical twins arises from complete splitting of a single fertilized egg.

Depends if fraternal or identical. With fraternal twins, two eggs are fertilized; each egg by a different sperm. With identical, one egg is fertilized then as pregnancy progresses, the egg splits producing two fetuses or more as in identical triplets, quads, etc.
