If they are not identical that means that your body released 2 eggs at the same time, and both were fertilized which causes non-identical twins or fraternal twins. Releasing two eggs doesn't always happen, but for some woman it can.
Identical twins is caused by one egg being fertilized by one sperm and then the egg separates into two identical embryos.

You only ovulate once. The type of twins would depend on what happened during ovulation if you produce 2 eggs you have maternal twins not identical (in most cases,)there is a fraternal set of twins known as mirror image twins( I do have mirror image twins) (another form of identical but not common) . If the twins were produced during conception the egg splits into two hence making the set of twins Fraternal not idetical having their own sac , with the rare exception of mirror image twins,

Nature dictates that the human species produce only one egg in a menstrual cycle. However, there are exceptions. Sometimes, you do end up with two eggs and therefore, giving chance for two sperms to do its job. You will end-up with non-identical twins. This is the kind of twins you'd naturally get if you conceive at a later age or use fertility enhancing therapy.
The other type - identical twins arises from complete splitting of a single fertilized egg.

Depends if fraternal or identical. With fraternal twins, two eggs are fertilized; each egg by a different sperm. With identical, one egg is fertilized then as pregnancy progresses, the egg splits producing two fetuses or more as in identical triplets, quads, etc.
