If you go on a vacation to just about anywhere in Mexico, there is an invisable barrier around the city. What I mean by that is if you start going alittle to far out of the "safe zone" you start seeing guards walking around with machine guns. These "safe" zones are created for resort guests (American travelers) and it keeps the riff raff out.
No where is safe, but if you do your excursions provided by your cruise line or hotel you should be fine. Stay with a group of people and don't venture out after dark. Don't put yourself in a possible bad position but don't limit yourself to not experiencing the world.
Get travelers checks when you arrive. If you do American Express ones they are refundable if something happens and don't take a lot of valuables, disposable cameras and not alot of jewlrey so in case something does happen, you were smart.

Actually, that is the best policed americanized destination in Mexico. I have been there twice. A good travel agent should tell you the best ways to be safe. If you have a family, the travel agent will tell you what times dont have rowdy students everywhere. They will tell you which hotel has less students also. If I took a family i would go to the Cancun Palace or the RitzCarlton.

Philadelphia is dangerous. Washington D.C. is dangerous. Manhattan is dangerous.
Don't worry too much about what you're hearing people say about statistics and crime rates. Just be safe and plan your vacation carefully. I had many people telling me not to vacation in Brazil, citing everything from high crime rates to random shootings to police dropping down on ropes from helicopters and shooting everyone in sight. Ridiculous.
I went to Brazil, stayed with friends, was careful about where I went and when, and I had no problems at all and enjoyed a stay in a gorgeous country.
There are plenty of tourist destination areas in Cancun that you can be relatively safe in. Probably safer than Philly. Be safe and have fun and don't worry too much.

Actually Randal_F is correct, Cancun could possibly be the safest city in Mexico you can ever be, but, just watch it heading out away from Cancun alright, just lock any personal expensive possesions you may have away in safe(I bought quite an inexpensive one in Wal-Mart for about 15 Dollars and it locks tightly).

As dangerous as any big city can be. The idea is not to put yourself into a situation that might make it dangerous. Stay in the nice parts of town and don't go somewhere you don't belong and you should have a great time. Rent a car and go south towards Tulum and see the jungle. Casa Cenote is a stop everybody should make. About one mile north of the town of Tulum.
Playa De Carmen is a must.

If you get drunk propably you'll be raped, but I think that you'll have a familiar vacation with your children, just be careful as you are at home and you won't have any problems.

Its only as dangerous as you make it. BE SMART. Dont carry valuable things visable (like you would do in any big city). Be observant. And dont get too stressed out about it.
