Yes, of course that's rude but that's people for you . They are flaky. What you could do now is call the whole thing off. Someone at my work did that once and the excuse she gave was she didn't have enough help to entertain (had to do it all herself) and everyone was OK with it. A few might be disappointed but most won't care. Getting together with your employees on a day off, or on your time is not something everyone is thrilled about doing anyways. I'm sure it will be OK for you to just cancel too unless you really want it.

Offer to reschedule for when people can make it, or else cancel it. Tell them you'll have another party some other time.

With big events it's often all or nothing, based on my experience. When you get everyone to show up it makes you feel popular, but when only one or two people show up when it was planned for forty, it makes you feel unwanted. This is human nature.

Make sure not to take it personally, that's the main thing.

Since people wanted you to organize it, they probably like you and value your organizational skills, otherwise why would they ask in the first place? Social events are often upredictable, and it's not because people are rude. The more you participate in organizing events, the more you'll notice it. If this party doesn't work out, the next one can be a great success!

First I must say that is quite rude of your friends. I think that your friends backed out because some of your other friends couldnt go so the rest of your friends wouldnt go either. It is very rude but your friends wanted to go with the crowd. Dont be angry though, everyone does that.

when they plan a party, tell them you already planned on going to a star-studded movie premiere. be creative in making them feel bad.
