The main social sciences include:

1. Anthropology (from the Greek word άνθρωπος, "human" or "person") consists of the study of humanity.

2. Communication

3. Cultural studies combines sociology, social theory, literary theory, media theory, film/video studies, cultural anthropology and art history/criticism to study cultural phenomena in industrial societies. Cultural studies researchers often concentrate on how a particular phenomenon relates to matters of ideology, race, social class, and/or gender.

4. Economics (from the Greek οἶκος [oikos], 'family, household, estate', and νόμος [nomos], 'custom, law', hence "household management" and "management of the state") is a social science that typically studies the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services.

5. Education Education formally is a social science that encompasses teaching and learning specific knowledge, beliefs, and skills.

6. Geography is the study of the Earth and its features and of the distribution of life on the earth, including human life and the effects of human activity

7. History refers to the study and interpretation of the record of humans, families, and societies.

8. Linguistics is the scientific study of human language, and someone who engages in this study is called a linguist.

9. Law

10. Political science is an academic and research discipline that deals with the theory and practice of politics and the description and analysis of political systems and political behavior.

11. Psychology

12. Social Policy aims to improve human welfare and to meet human needs for education, health, housing and social security

13. Sociology is the study of society and human social action. It generally concerns itself with the social rules and processes that bind and separate people not only as individuals, but as members of associations, groups, and institutions, and includes the examination of the organization and development of human social life.

Not all institutions recognize these fields as social sciences:
Communication, cultural studies and history may be classified as humanities depending on how they are taught, and in which country they are taught.
Psychology is a very broad science that is rarely tackled as a whole, major block. Although some subfields encompass a natural science base and a social science application, others can be clearly distinguished as having little to do with the social sciences or having a lot to do with the social sciences
