Non-physical, like, you couldn't paint the person's house because it would be physical labor?
I think the best way is to be consistently available for the person, rain or shine. I will always remember, when my cat's tail was bleeding like a faucet, which friend was "just about to sit down to dinner" and couldn't help me get the cat to a hospital (I didn't have a car at the time) and which friend immediately said, "I'll be right there." and hung up the phone, arriving at my house at the speed of light.
Maybe both friends loved me. But one certainly demonstrated it more clearly than the other when it mattered.

Many people believe in the idea of five languages of love. physical affection is one of them, but there are others, for example, making or doing something for them, buying or just giving something, verbal expression, or just spending time together. People usually resonate with a certain way more than another (ie. some people will buy you things more often whereas another thinks spending time is more meaningful.) I personally will make things for people that I care about, but I have known people of all kinds. It's best to figure out what the person you want to show your affection for uses more because if you 'speak their language' ,in a sense, then they'll be more likely to understand the emotion you're trying to show.
That's kind of the basis of the idea, and I think it helps me, but you can read about it in Gary Chapman's book, "The Five Love Languages" (the website for his stuff is http://www.fivelovelanguages.com/ )
also, you'll probably notice that other people's posts show what language they use more or think is more affective. some say verbal, some say quality time, some say making something, and some buying.

Spend quality time with them. At the end of the day, when all the festivities are over, the material things have faded and the days get long, people remember the moments we made them feel special.
