I imagine that people don't realize that asking thought-provoking .. or just provoking :-) .. questions is your way of saying, "I want to be left alone"

I know exactly what you mean, it seems that most people just have to open their pieholes, and tell anyone, and everyone what they think, no matter that in a lot of cases, it is fairly obvious that their opinion is neither wanted nor needed.
For some time, I would slowly work it into what was going on, and eventually I would be able to excuse myself without feeling guilty or embarassed, now, I just politely tell them to wrap it up, or I just walk off, because I`m at the point in my life, that I no longer care to put up with that kind of thing, and if someone still continues, I tell them point blank, to ZIP it!
I try to do all this as nicely as I can, but by the time I get to telling them to zip it, I don`t care if they get pissed off or not, I am no longer going to waste energy in trying to defend myself to brick walls.

you don't "have to". it's a choice. if people are nasty there are many ways of handling it. one is to smile, and politely say, i'm sorry we disagree here, but i have my opinion and we'll have to leave it at that. never be sarcastic or defensive. for some reason, people feel the need to defend themselves when they haven't committed an offence..it's a habit, usually, that one isn't aware of.
if you're on the phone and someone is nasty, say..i don't want to engage in this conversation, i have to hang up now and do so. again..don't slam the phone.
examine yourself closely, then ask someone who knows you well, whom you trust, if you are somehow bringing this upon yourself. if they tell you nicely where you are taking a wrong turn, don't be insulted, say ok, i'm going to look at that and see where it comes from. thanks for your help. then do an inventory of your behavior and see if they are on the money.
sorry this was so long, but the answers can be quite complex. it almost always takes two people to argue. i have learned for myself that if i clash with someone on a regular basis, i am half of that equation, and it is up to me to pull out of the situation or change my actions or reactions.

Because people don't care what you want. I'm not trying to be nasty here, they honestly don't care. They want what they want, and it doesn't matter if it's what you want. If they want to bug you they will, and no matter what you say, they won't leave you alone. They have no respect, or manners, and it's the way they were raised. Sad really.
