The sharp-tipped metal darts were dangerous, as anyone with a brain could determine. Having them around kids was about a hundred times more dangerous than dartboard darts. After 6000 injuries, one death, and one coma, they were finally banned from sale in the US. One UK company that made them continued to sell them as "replacement parts" for several years.
The problem was that to save time and effort, players would place the targets at a distance and have players throw darts back and forth, including *toward the other players* not to mention unwary bystanders.

We had a set when I was growing up. They were outlawed at some point because people complained that they were dangerous. Similarly, Georgia high schools (and I'm sure other states) don't allow the javelin at Track and Field meets.
Any way, I would do an eBay search for "Jarts"--that was the "brand name" of our set that we had.
