If you don't have a hub at home, you can install two network cards on one computer and then use the networking wizard on both computers if you use Windows xp

Use a crossover network cable instead of a regular ethernet cable to connect the 2 computers. It is usually an orange cable available at a computer store

Been there, done that with much hair-pulling! Networking through a hub is a lot easy. But ethernet cable work just as well.

Buy 2 ethernet cards to install in both pc. Plug in the cable RJ45 plugs of a Crossover Ethernet cable. Card should be automatically recognized and driver installed by Windows XP. If have driver disk - install that

You need to configure both pc for networking.

Follow this setup procedure:
Select Settings_Network Connections. Select Local Area Network.

Install following protocols. NWLink NetBios, NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBios Compatible Transport Protocol. Install service - File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.

Next - configuring Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Double on this entry. select - Use following IP Address.

For PC 1 which will be the host.
TYPE IN:
IP Address: 192.168.0.1
PRESS TAB NEXT:
255.255.255.0 (automatically pops up)
Last entry type:
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

For PC 2:
TYPE IN:
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
PRESS TAB NEXT:
255.255.255.0 (automatically pops up)
Last entry type:
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Select Advanced Tab. Deselect Internet Connection Firewall. If this is left on, you are gonna hit a brickwall. Communication between the 2 pcs will be blocked!

One last final configuration steps.
Go Control Panel_Network Connections. Select a Home or Small Office Network setup. Go next, next until you get to Select a Connection Method. Select Other. Click Next. Select This Computer connects directly to the Internet. I do not have a Network yet. Click Next. Once configuring is all done select Do Nothing. ALL DONE.

Windows ask to restart. Allow reboot.

Next confirming configurations on any PC. Select Run_Type "CMD". Dos screen appears in a small window. Type in "ipconfig". If everything is ok it will display IP address, etc, with all the numbers that you type previously.

Next testing connection. Using PC1 - type "ping 192.168.0.2". Test using PC2 - type "ping 192.168.0.1". If all goes well it will immediately return message "Reply from 192.168.0.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128".

YOU ARE CONNECTED!! (If it blinks, back to more hair-pulling!)

Yes, connected but still can't see a thing. Go back to Windows, launch File Explorer. On each PC select the Drives you want to share. Right click_select Sharing and Security. Click on "Click if you understand the risk, bla, bla. bla". Select Share this Folder on the network. Select Allow Network Users to change my files. Click OK_ALL DONE!

REBOOT Windows. Back in_now go click on my Network Places. Right Click_select Explore. Entire Network pops out. Right_Click again_Select Expand. Expand Microsoft Windows Network. Now all the shared folders should appear. Click on any folders to copy across or open files from vis visa PC1 and PC2.

FINALLY YOU ARE NETWORKED!!!!

If the 2 computers have built in ethernet ports, then you need either a hub or switch, or a cross over cable. Once connected the computers should indicate link. From there, they need to be configured to be on the same IP network and subnet. Once that's configured you should be able to do whatever you want with them.
