because the team practices it and its called throwing around its kind of saying good job to the pitcher and they dont always throw it around because if somebody is on base they could steal

It's called "Around the horn". It's tradition. Wish I knew who started it. As a former and current catcher(not sure why) I have never figured it out.

I think they throw it so that the other players can toss it around to each other. Its kind of like a warm up thing, and it keeps the players alert.

because if a player is on second he wants to make sure that the player does not steal orto make sure thatif he does then he has a close proximity to home and also the third is closer to second so if a player does then he can see third in his good eye the others are in his blind spot
