consistently working dressage will get through to him. It sounds like that would be good for him even if you don't compete. Teaching him to give and be supple and relaxed can only make the horse better...and may help YOU too. Sometimes the horse does better if we 'get out of his way' and don't interfere (especially when we dont' realise we're interfering). If he's spent any time on the track CONTROL is going to be an issue...don't let him think an all out flight in Xcountry means he isn't under your wishes - he'll get speed crazed and sloppy and one or both of you will get hurt. TBs are awesome - but know what you're getting into and be ready for the challenges HE presents. It sounds like dressage work would be very good for him.

Looking for an eventing trainer might be the right answer. Also, you can't really get out of the dressage part of the event, although I'm sure if you find a competent trainer to work with him he will probably come around to the training. Most thoroughbreds I've worked with are happy doing anything as long as they're kept working/learning no matter how stubborn they may be.

Do a web search for Alexandra Kurland... she's a horse trainer who uses clickers and operant conditioning to train horses. It may in the beginning help your horse over it's stubborn ness, but will also help you teach him things. Here's a link to her website -

Good luck
