I know it is to separate the copper windings. But what was the technical reason for having the twine and the calico cloth? I am looking for a scientific reason.

Yup this answer is correct. Twine and calico were the best insulators available to him.

I bet you already know the answer. It was to seperate the coil windings in his transformers. We still do it today.
