The smell is very strong and permeates the entire space. House has been unlived in for 4 months. What can be used to clean up the source of the odor, not just to cosmetically cover the odor temporarily?

Open all the windows wide open and let it air out for a few days. Shampoo the carpets and wash the walls or repaint.

Febreeze may help with the cloth items. As far as the carpet a simple mixture of 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts cold water will get the smell out of the carpet. Use this mixture in a steam cleaner. I would think repainting the walls and ceilings would seal any odors in them.

Several bowls or small containers of ground coffee. It really works! Put about 1/2 to 1 cup of ground coffee is several places, it might take a 1/2 day depending on how strong the smoke is. While your waiting, clean all curtains and anything washable, if there's no time, spray them with a vinegar and water solution. If all fails, use "Febreeze". Good Luck!

Wash all hard surfaces. Inside and outside, topside and bottomside. eg cabinets, closets, drawers

Wash all fabrics. curtains, carpets, bedding, clothes.

Throw away all paper. books, boxes

Wash all plastics, ceilings, fixtures, walls.

Paint.

Frebreze, a gallon or so.

Dispose of ashtrays and residual ashes.

If you can't do it, look in the phone book for water/smoke (fire)damage restoration. The have Ozone generators which are expensive but will kill people, pets and smoke particutates

Air out the home.

Time will oxidize the smoke particulates.

Hotels often experience this problem so let's assume they have found the best approach. They repaint and replace window curtains.

Febreeze has worked well for me, but you may have to use it more than once. Shampoo the carpets with it too.
