My boyfriend is 9 years older than I am. I'm not concerned about any age difference, but I'm subtley aware of differences in how we perceive relationships - I feel like he is a guy of the 80s...and I sometimes think that movies, for example, show how relationships between men and women have changed over time. I mean, when I watch 80s movies, I can see the influences that he must had and the potential reasons for how he deals with our relationship....I see the similarities between my older brother (also about 10 yrs. older than I am) and his girlfriend. Could there be a significant gap in generation between us that explains why we see relationships so differently?

I should think that would be a tremendous advantage. Just think of the things you have to talk about that would be superfluous if you shared the exact same experiences growing up! I dated a guy once who saw the first man walk on the moon. Hearing him talk about all of that was one of the most intimate moments of our relationship, because he had something he could share with me of which I had no concept, something that had meant a lot to him as a child.

I can really only speak for myself on this subject. I had quite a bit of childhood trauma. I don't think about it much. But...I do act like a kid, and there is no way that I look as old as I really am. I like to laugh and there is absolutely no way that I can be even remotely considered a conservative. However, I do find it funny that people when they first meet me think I would listen to country music, lol. However, I think I could slamdance to some Waylon, Willie and Hank if I had enough shine flowing. I don't worry about where I think others should be, or even where they are at, because I have a hard enough time keeping up with myself.

I think the difference is one of those things that makes your relationship so interesting. ...because he's older than you, he is probably mature and you can probably exchange views on certain things, have different opinions, but still respect each other. It's not so much the "gap" between you that explains why you see relationships differently, it may simply be how you both grew up and the experiences that you both endured.

sometimes its really annoying, but just sometimes. You've listed the differences; now just list the reasons why are you both in love. You'll see the gap's nothing!
(Tip: you know, we women get older in look faster than men do, so it's good you will always look younger than him, and that makes him think of no other women just for young ages!)

It could be a generation gap, but it could be a lot of other things too. I mean, we don't learn about relationships from movies. We learn about them from people we know, especially our parents. There's much more that goes into it.

Yes, you just answered your own question. But difference doesn't mean that it won't work.
