I listed some links where you can do some preliminary name checking. However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what's out there.

Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free & a great place to start, so I'd try them out first.

There are other sites that offer free searching capabilities in conjunction with their commercial services, so I'm not able to post those links due to the Yahoo! TOS. You'll also want to check domain names & yellow pages, so simply do a search for "free domain name search" and "national yellowpages" and the appropriate links will pop up.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Trademarks can be registered with the government of whatever country you are interested in. There are searchable databases on the internet but they are not necessarily up to date and therefore not totally reliable. (If you find something listed in the database it would not be available but just because it isn't listed online doesn't mean it is available.)

The Canadian government site is:
http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/sc_consu/trade-marks/engdoc/disclaimer.html

The U.S. site is:
http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=tess&state=17eahe.1.1

There is no fee to search those sites.

A trademark doesn't have to be registered in order to be valid, so you should search for unregistered trademarks as well. Google is one good place to do that.

The Canadian government recommends "that a trade-mark agent or an experienced trade-mark searcher be consulted if a thorough search of Canadian trade-marks or interpretation of search results is required."

by visiting the Department of Trademark and Industry, such government agency would help you to search if theres any other name( the name that you would like to register) in other place of your country or in the whole world.
