Here is the deal. We live in an extremely capitalistic society, and the wealth is not spread as evenly as it should be. The poor can not afford to eat properly. It is much easier to feed your family with hamburger-helper than properly prepared fresh wholesome foods. It is far too expensive. Say a family of three goes to buy groceries, if they choose to buy healthier foods their grocery bill would be close to 600 a month; whereas if they bought cheap, tasty, fatty, filling, junky foods their bill would be closer to 400. That's 2400 bucks a year that they need to spend filling up their SUVs. A lot of people made good points on here, like being lazy, the need to drive everywhere, easy access to fast food. The main this is this...the poor are in the majority....and without redistribution of wealth...it's diabetes for us all. This may be considered the land of the free, but it is the home of the fat.

Why is it then that you have all stated..too much sugar, fat, chemicals, steroids,,toxins and just about every thing else in your food BUT you will keep buying and keep eating all the processed junk you can get your hands on.
You seem pretty upset about what goes into your food but do nothing about it,,with any other problem that upsets you, you seem to be VERY vocal and get things changed quite quickly...what is the difference here,,you dont care if the nation dies of obesity as long as you all have nice teeth and face lifts ?

Most American foods contain much more sugars and preservatives than that of foreign food. Plus as stated in other postings, Americans tend to eat more fast food than many countries. The food found at foreign fast food chains is also much better for you than that of american food, still not much better... but a little. I would disagree that Americans are lazy! Many of them are... however, I would have to say that the French are by far the laziest... but then again, they eat a lot of goat cheese and drink a lot of wine... that tends to keep them thin.

Beside the obvious answer of fast food, restaurants have made portions monstrous. Many dinner entrees at restaurants contains enough calories for an entire family. This kind of baffles me, because Americans are SO set on making money. You would think that restaurants would give you as little food as possible so they would be the ones making money. I guess you could say the average American has an appetite for life! (Or not depending on how you look at it, seeing that being obese IS killing you faster...)

OK i recently moved to America and also noticed this. the difference here is that, 1, you almost always need to go to the supper market to by food, where youl will be tempted with all the junk staring you in the face. 2, vegetables are not very popular here, where as meat and cheesy stuff is. 3, the distances are so great betwean every thing you always need a car to get to places and you can't walk somewhere without taking half a day to get there.
just my observasion...

Its because most Americans are lazy, they go to work and they sit at a desk all day and do absolutely nothing. They eat to much McDonalds, and are too busy to cook a healthy meal. They just don't care.

not ALL americans are fat, but the majority are. there are a lot of fast food places and i'm guessing that most americans don't care about their health. and we're also reallly lazy!
i'm american but i DO care about my health, i go walking everyday for an hour and eat healthy so it's all good.
