It didn't use to be. There used to be nothing downtown but seedy movie theaters that showed only "blaxploitation" movies or kung fu movies. There was a porno theater right where the Goodman theater is now. There was a strip club that got busted a lot for protitutuion and drugs where the Harold Washington Library is now. The south end of State Street was nothing but cheap clothing stores and pawn shops. The Greyhound bus station used to be where the Thompson Center is now and was filled with bums, hookers and pimps waiting on girls arriving in Chicago to TURN them into hookers. Navy Pier was this rat-infested, rusting hulk that was falling apart. The area around Wrigley Field was a haven for gangs and drug dealing. The uptown area was Skid Row (ok, it still is, but there are a lot of new condos cropping up.
But now... well, for better or worse, it's a GREAT city for tourists.
and to sickntyred... wow, that has to be the longest post ever on Yahoo Answers...

Nah, absolutely nothing to do whatsoever ;)
Chicago has tons and tons of things for tourists. Some of the best museums in the Country - Art Institute, Field Museum, Science and Industry Museum.
Two major league baseball teams, plus basketball, football and hockey (don't ask Chicagoans about the last three; sore subjects)
It's one of the great architectural cities in the world. It invented the skyscraper back in 1890, and has some of the earliest major skyscrapers still standing (south end of Dearborn - Monadnock, Fisher, Old Colony). Oak Park was home to Frank Lloyd Wright for many years and contains many examples of his early work. There are over fifty Wright homes/buildings in greater Chicago.
It also contains the work of Louis Sullivan and many other major architects.

And it's a great food town. Deep dish pizza, huge hot dogs, Greektown.... Taste of Chicago comes up in two weeks.

Chicago is pretty cool. If you're looking for somewhere to go that's a little more exciting, I suggest New York City, Boston, or Montreal. I've been to a lot of places over the years...and if you like cities, those are my favorites. If you like quiet yet touristy places, try Bar Harbor in Maine (Or Acadia), or some places in Michigan.

I've travel to many places. Abroad and domestic and I always end up homesick after a week or so.
Chicago is the best, especially when you are flying into O'Hare late at night on a clear night and you get that great view of our sky line! Nothing beats that!
not even NY!

Are you from Chicago? Are you asking opinions for people to visit or the opinions of the people who have visited?
I ask because you have another question asking which radio station, the drive or the loop. Why do you have your my space link there, too?!?!?
