I would check your local law enforcement (for suspects!).
True story: in a little town in SoCal a few years ago, near San Bernardino, if you know where that is, an officer shot a large housecat because he mistook it for a mountain lion that had been seen around the neighborhood the past few days.
A neighbor had taken a video, so we know that there was actually a lion in the area, but this was definately not it! Worse, the press happened to be there, and a photographer got a shot of the head of animal control picking up the recently-killed animal.
The officer who shot it will never live it down, I'm sure.
