When one yawns, its usually a sign of one needing more oxygen, or that he is tired.
If everyone is in an enclosed environment, it is natural for them to yawn (since its purpose is to suck in air).
Perhaps by yawning, it is a sign of everyone agreeing that they are worn out and it is time to go to bed.

The psychology involved in the brain, yawning triggers something int the brain to make you yawn. It is actually proven that reading the word yawn enough times will make you yawn. Yawning is contageous, I do not remember the specifics of yawns in my psych book, but I can almost guarantee that you have yawned at least once while reading this paragraph about yawning. YAWN.

I read somewhere that yawning is a prehistoric social group response beginning from herds of animals. It was a warning to other group members that one of the members was getting sleepy, so the others needed to be on greater look-out for predators. In turn, other members would yawn to notify the greater herd of the need to pay greater attention. Whether true or not, I have no idea. Sounded plausible to me, however.

I have heard that the yawn is a lack of oxygen. Since - when you are in a group - you are mostly doing the same thing, such as sitting down or talking on the phone, relaxed... not breathing as deep as needed... then you both may have the oxygen deficiency. (Contagious is one thing, just get rid of it before it is permanent. LOL)

it's called mimicry, very common to unconsciously mimic other peoples behavior. If you read up on body language and social behavior it's all part of that. If you watch people you can see that it's more than just yawning. It can be arm or leg positions, etc.

I am no doctor but I think that when you see someone yawn it reminds you of how tired you are and that's why you do it too.

According to psychologists it is a sympathetic response. Moreover, if someone doesn't yawn when another does, it is indicative of anti-social behavior.
